Modernizing Legacy Systems Without the Big Bang

The big-bang rewrite is seductive: freeze the old system, build the new one, flip the switch. It is also how modernization projects go to die. Requirements drift, the old system keeps changing underneath you, and the cutover risk concentrates into a single terrifying weekend.

Incremental modernization works differently. You identify the highest-friction capability, build it well on the new stack, and route traffic to it. The legacy system shrinks over time instead of exploding on a single launch day.

The technical pattern matters less than the discipline: characterize existing behavior with tests before you touch it, migrate data with validation at every step, and keep both systems honest until the old one is truly empty.
