Drupal 11 was released in August 2024, and the most important thing to know is that it is not a repeat of the Drupal 7 to 8 chasm. If your site runs Drupal 10 and its modules are current, the move to 11 is an upgrade in the ordinary sense of the word: deprecated code gets cleaned up, dependencies get newer, and the site stays the site.
What is genuinely new is mostly about the people who build and maintain sites: newer PHP and Symfony underneath, better recipes for standing up common configurations, and continued investment in the modern administrative experience. Worthwhile, but not urgent for a healthy Drupal 10 site, which remains supported and secure for now.
The calendar that matters more is the one behind you. If you are on Drupal 7, Drupal 11's release is another signal that the platform has moved definitively on, and the migration you have deferred did not get smaller this year. If you are on Drupal 9 or earlier 10 releases, the path forward is routine, and the main discipline is keeping contributed modules current so each step stays small.
Our guidance: Drupal 10 sites should plan the 11 upgrade as normal maintenance within the next year, not as an emergency. Drupal 7 sites should stop watching version announcements entirely and start the migration conversation. The gap does not narrow by waiting.
